Still with the heron! Here it is fishing for food and I was delighted to watch it. I love the picture of concentration and how it’s focused. Love how clear the reflection is!

White-faced heron at the lake
Here the heron is flying over the reeds at one part of the lake and heading to an area where it will seek food. Coming for a landing. Just look at those wings.
White-faced Heron
The white-faced heron is one of my favourite birds to follow around at the lake. I first saw it near the beach and once it became aware of me, it kept ahead so that it could see me but wasn’t too close. All fluffed up and keeping a fence between me and it.
Cattle Egret
I’d mentioned how I’ve noticed different birds at the lake lately. When I was walking the other day I saw two white birds take off from the flock of seagulls at the edge of the lake. I’d assumed, at first, they were gulls too, but when I noticed their shape and colour when flying, and…
Whistling Kites
I’ve noticed a few different birds at the lake of recent times. Birds I’d not noticed before. I don’t know if it’s a seasonal thing or because of the extended dry period we’ve had, or if it’s because I’m noticing things more. At any rate, I was delighted to see these two birds slowly circling…
Footprints in the sand
Walking around the lake last week I noticed these footprints in the sand, both bird and human. I do find the bird footprints fascinating. The bird that made these footprints is the Purple Swamp Hen. Not the most attractive of birds by any means.
Silver eye visitors
The Silver-eye are very tiny birds with a constant two-part ‘cheep’ sound. They love our fig tree and are all over it currently. You can see from the size of the figs below that these are quite tiny birds. Their colouring makes it easy for them to hide in the foliage of this tree and…
Lorikeets in the Fig Tree
Our figs suddenly ripened a week ago. We were thinking they weren’t going to this year round. We’d had a long hot dry summer and we hadn’t watered the tree, or most of our garden, wanting to preserve our water as we live on tank water. We got some rain, wind and sun in the…
Visit to Lilydale Lake
I went to Lilydale Lake the other day and had a wander around the lake. Had a huge white bird fly over my head from behind me. Wish I knew it was coming otherwise I would have been ready to take shots but I didn’t. 🙁 Was looking the other way. Below is a Darter…
Tawny Frogmouths
I got an excited phone call a couple of mornings ago from a neighbour. In her back garden were three Tawny Frogmouths and she wanted me to come over straight away and take some photos. Of which I did. Beautiful birds and you can see, from their colouring and some of their strange poses, how…
Two young Lorikeets
The other day I heard a couple of Rainbow Lorikeets in our garden and went and tracked them down. I trod carefully as they’re usually flighty and take off really quickly. But these two were curious and stuck around. They were smaller than most I’d seen and I came to the conclusion they were youngsters….
More ducks at the wetlands
Below, in order are: White-eyed Duck (Hardhead Aythya australis) Chestnut Teal (Male) Chestnut Teal (Female) Dusky Moorhen, I loved how you could see its feet paddling under the water
