Australian King Parrot

I heard a bird calling in our front yard and knew it was an Australian King Parrot. They’ve been hanging around a lot lately. A family of them. This is a grown male.  He watched me put seed in the feeder (the reason he was calling I’m sure) and then just sat and watched me without moving to the feeder. He made noises to me and I chatted back to him. I then put seed in the palm of my left hand and he leant down from his branch slowly and fed from my hand.  Had I smaller lens on my camera I would have taken a shot but I had my longer lens on which is no good for really up close shots.  Here are some I took of him that day.

They are a beautiful bird, quite large and appear to be friendly too, not as afraid of us as other birds are.

Australian King Parrots

As I was working in my garden on the weekend (yay, we had sunshine on a weekend…. finally!) we had a family of King Parrots come visit. Didn’t see mum but dad (bright red chest) was there, along with the kiddies. They had been watching me in the garden and calling so I went and got some seed and put it in the two feeders and they came down from the trees quite quickly after that.

Close up of King Parrot

When you go to Grant’s Picnic Grounds in Kallista you can get up close and personal to the birds.  The kiosk sells birdseed to the tourists and visitors.  In these shots I’d taken a family member from interstate to visit the grounds and experience getting up close and personal to these beautiful birds.  I believe this bird is a juvenile.
