I love that we have a wide variety of flowering bushes and trees in our garden. They are definitely bird attractors. When we first shifted here to Selby 12 years ago we probably only saw a dozen or so different species. But, today, it’s close to 40 throughout the year, depending on what’s in season in our garden. While there were some young grevilleas in our front garden there were mainly large gum trees, oak trees and liquidambers, not a lot of smaller bushes or native bushes, for that matter. My husband and I have done a lot of planting in the time we’ve been here, a mix of native bushes and non-native. Salvias, callistemons and grevilleas certainly attract a lot of bird life and bees as well, but other trees and bushes we’ve planted have also helped.
Two regular visitors to the garden are Red Wattlebirds and Eastern Spinebills, all year round – and our grevilleas are in flower all year round. Must be why they love being here in our garden. And, at this time of year, we also see Yellow faced Honeyeaters, as well as Lewins Honeyeaters too.
Regular visitors, the year round, include Magpies, Kookaburras, and Crimson Rosellas, as well as Blackbirds and Fairy-wrens.
Other birds we currently (late Spring) have here are: Pied Currawongs, Brown Thornbills, Silvereyes, 2 pairs of Wood Ducks, occasional Sulphur-crested Cockatoos, Grey Fantails, Eastern Rosellas, occasional Rainbow Lorikeets and King Parrots. I love seeing the variety that turn up throughout the year and get excited to see them, and photograph them. I wonder what you see in your gardens?
