And so, 2023 has begun! Looking over the past year, for me it’s been a major year of birding. I was re-introduced to the eBird app earlier in 2022 and this time it really clicked. I’d first used it in 2017 – twice, and then promptly forgot about it. But last year, I began to record, in earnest, the birds I was seeing regularly and all my firsts or #lifers as they’re known in the bird photography world.
I’d recorded a total of 156 species for the year, with 147 of those being in Victoria. The rest were in South Australia, when on a holiday. This brings my total of 172 birds I’ve recorded as having been seen in Australia since I first got the app. I hope to increase that a great deal during 2023 as my husband and I plan some travels around our state of Victoria and then, eventually, further afield.
Already, just today, I’ve recorded 20 species, heard and/or seen, at my home in Selby, Victoria. I look forward to growing that a great deal just this month, weather permitting, of course. It’s hard to travel too far if it’s very hot but cooler weather is very welcome, as long as not wet or too overcast. I like some colour in my skies (blue I mean) when photographing birds.
