Was outside watching the birds this afternoon. It’s been quite cold and today the wind is bitter, so I was rugged up but the sun was out and I needed to just be outside for awhile. Thought I’d try and get some photos of kookaburras in flight – which isn’t easy when you have a…

Amazing discovery – 4 winged duck!
I made an amazing discovery yesterday! Who would have guessed I’d make such a discovery and get a shot of it too? It’s true! I was at Birdsland Reserve yesterday morning, one of my favourite haunts for bird life and landscape views and I saw some ducks take off from the second lake. I’ve been…
New Year, new things
Been awhile since I’ve written a post here but that’s because I’ve been busy elsewhere. I’m slowly building a following at Instagram and also have another website dedicated to garden photography. Growing the stock library there does take some time to do but it’s getting there. And I also have an Instagram account for that…
Eastern spinebill in salvia
I’ve been away on holidays overseas and it’s taking me awhile to get through all the photos I took. However, I’m back to taking local photos now too. This is an eastern spinebill in salvia in our garden. I love seeing the birds here all year round, even in winter, enjoying what our garden has…
Kookaburra in the garden
This gorgeous bird and two companions were keeping watch in our garden this afternoon. Love the kookaburras, such beautiful looking birds. Don’t forget that we have our nature photography workshop near the end of next month! Bookings are still open but places are limited and there’s only a few spots left. http://www.steveparish-natureconnect.com.au/events/
Beautiful Bower Bird
I knew these hung around but I’d never been able to get really close to them. Imagine my surprise when three flew into our front garden recently, when I already had my camera in hand and was looking out the window! This one flew into the liquidamber opposite the window and watched me, the other…
And more birds from Lilydale Lake Park
And here are some more, a couple of water birds and a tiny wren. Superb fairy-wren. Think this was a male. White-faced Grey Heron. It watched me carefully, trying to weigh up whether to fly off or continue foraging. I moved away and left it in peace after I got a couple of shots. Female…
More birds at Lilydale Lake Park
More birds I saw at the park last week. The last two are water birds although the Lapwings are frequently found near water too. The Masked Lapwing (formerly known as the Masked Plover) Purple Swamp Hen Little Pied Cormorant P.S. Who do you know in Victoria that would like to improve their nature photography skills…
Birds at Lilydale Lake Park
Recently visited Lilydale Lake Park and there were quite a few different species of birds there. Here are some of them. The Australian White Ibis. Quite the scavenger wherever humans hang out. The short-billed (or Little) Corella. Very noisy birds when in flocks together. P.S. Who do you know in Victoria that would like to…
The birds at Blue Lotus Water Garden
The birds were mostly elusive but there were some that came out to play. Some of the photography group that went with me got a lot more images of birds but here are some I saw whilst visiting there. This is Freddie, as named by the owners of the garden. He’s a regular visitor there,…
A visit to the Cranbourne Botanical Gardens
I don’t go to this place nearly often enough. Situated in Cranbourne, just off the freeway, this botanical gardens has both natural bushland and formal Australian gardens. A lovely place to visit if you’re wanting to see what a bush, flower or tree might look like before you plant it in your own garden. Or…
The Eastern Spinebill
A regular visitor to our garden it particularly loves the nectar from the Grevillea flower. I was fortunate not to be noticed in the shadow of a nearby tree, sufficiently, to get reasonable shots of this normally flighty bird.
